From its original vision 30 years ago to transform 2,360 acres of undeveloped land in Dearborn and Allen Park, MI, into a master-planned community, Ford Land is now focused on transforming a 20th-century industrial icon (the revolutionary Rouge complex in Dearborn that premiered Henry Ford’s “vertically integrated” approach to manufacturing) “into a model of 21st-century sustainable manufacturing.” The $2-billion project will offer world-class flexibility (a sustainability model in its own right), as well as an ecologically inspired living roof, natural plants that rid the soil of contaminants, porous paving to manage stormwater runoff, landscaping and wildlife to create a shady habitat, and renewable energy sources such as solar cells and fuel cells. Energy-efficiency initiatives - a long-held Ford staple - now meld with resource-efficient building in this ongoing redevelopment project. In 2003, Ford was awarded LEED Gold certification for the complex’s Visitor Center.
