Serving more than 900,000 students, 80,000-plus employees, and over 1,000 schools, Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD’s) educational construction program - the largest developed and undertaken by a school district in the state of California - is impressive and straightforward. Since the mid-1990s, it has been addressing critical repair and modernization needs at existing facilities “to build and maintain schools that promote the full development of the child, are educationally and environmentally sound, enhance their neighborhoods through design and programming as centers of community, and reflect the wise and efficient use of limited land and public resources.” Overall planned and funded projections over the next 10- to 15-year period are at $30 billion, with an additional $4.5 billion bond to be presented to voters in Spring 2006. ’Nuff said.
