Targeting the do-it-yourselfer and professional markets with a broad product assortment, The Home Depot Inc. practices what it preaches: Home Depot has modernized stores and upgraded technology, including a new network operations center in Texas, and plans to add 175 stores in fiscal year 2005 (the second of two big-growth years). Beyond its obvious success in sales ($73.1 billion in revenue at end of fiscal year 2004) and its phenomenal expansion, it may be the No. 1 impetus in creating a new generation of buildings professionals. Its Kids Workshop, a free, award-winning program, is designed for children ages 5 to 12 to use their skills (with adult supervision) to create objects that can be used in and around their homes or communities.
