A record 22 new schools will be opening this fall at Chicago Public Schools, but even more impressive are the improvements to the system’s existing 600 facilities: 372 schools with new roofs, 347 schools with new windows, 330 schools with masonry repairs, 2,094 renovation projects, and 58 state-of-the-art science labs, just to name a few. Such results speak to the goals that have helped facility operations improve the quality of service accorded to all its assets. That includes enlarging its pre-qualified pool of contractors for repair and maintenance projects, as well as instituting a custodial inspection program and associated database to establish a baseline of each building’s cleanliness to better ascertain base needs, staff training needs, supplies, and equipment requirements.
