www.iastate.eduWith nine colleges, one school, 55 academic departments, and five extension areas, Iowa State University (ISU), Ames, IA, serves the need of approximately 22,230 undergraduates; 409 professional students; 4,741 graduate students; and more than 14,300 faculty, permanent staff, and student/hourly employees. ISU’s nearly 2,000-acre, park-like campus includes more than 160 buildings, many of which are included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Facilities Planning & Management department (www.fpm.iastate.edu) oversees more than 63 million square feet of space in non-residences, and a “Master Plan” for the university – driven by the projected addition of approximately 2.9 million gross square feet of new building space over the next two to three decades – will represent a project growth of approximately 40-percent more space over existing non-residential buildings.[Editors’ Note: Iowa State University’s well-designed “Master Plan,” as well as its aggressive energy-efficiency benchmarking and subsequent action plan, bode well for this heartland America school, which is one of the nation’s premier learning centers for tomorrow’s great architects, engineers, and buildings professionals. What makes this institution’s Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) department unique is its use of Six Sigma in conjunction with other initiatives that have been established in its strive toward excellence. What better place to champion process improvement in real-world applications that can be shared with tomorrow’s industry leaders?]This year’s ‘A’ List, developed by the Buildings’ Editorial Staff, is based upon industry interviews, questionnaires, and published information: 10K reports, company websites, industry-related reports, Hoover’s Online, and other published and electronic materials. While every attempt has been made to make the ‘A’ List and the Buildings Census as complete as possible, Buildings’ magazine cannot guarantee the accuracy of all information.
