The 2003 'A' List
1Wal-Mart Stores Inc.Bentonville, AR(479) 273-4000www.walmartstores.comThis big box retail giant rules both domestically and internationally, with square footage in excess of 560 million. Domestically, Wal-Mart has 1,568 discount stores: 151.9 million square feet; 1,258 Supercenters: 234.6 million square feet; 525 SAM’s Clubs: 65.7 million square feet; and 49 Neighborhood Markets: 2.16 million square feet. Internationally, the tally rises to an additional      1,288 retail facilities totaling 106.2 million square feet. The corporation also operates 84 Wal-Mart distribution facilities, 19 SAM’s Club distribution facilities, and 37 McLane distribution facilities. It owns its Bentonville, AK, corporate HQ facilities and an office facility in Temple, TX, that serves as the McLane subsidiary home office. The company also leases an office facility in Brisbane, CA, that serves as the home office for Wal-Mart.com. Listed No. 1 on the 2003 Fortune 100, Wal-Mart continues to hold its spot as the world’s No. 1 retailer, as well. It posted sales revenues of $244.5 billion for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2003. In fueling its global expansion, published reports indicate Wal-Mart plans to add 800,000 workers worldwide over the next five years and up to 130 new stores in existing markets in 2003. By year-end, up to 165 stores are slated to open in the United States, with another 170 properties moved or expanded domestically. As a result, spokespeople from Wal-Mart indicate that Supercenters should outnumber traditional discounts for the first time.[Editors’ Note: Wow. Forty years after its first discount store opened, Wal-Mart proves itself again and again – with unprecedented (for the industry and for the economy) expansion and growth. Price-conscious Americans really do love Wal-Mart – even though many rival grocers and local merchants are quick to point a finger at this big-box retailer as at least one of the reasons behind their own poor performance. Of particular note is the company’s Good.Works initiative, in which more than 3,200 company facilities and associates raised and contributed more than $196 million to charitable organizations nationwide – of which approximately $6 million have been earmarked for a variety of environmental causes and organizations. Wal-Mart promotes its preservation of the environment through energy controls, energy-efficient product review and training, lighting retrofits, and green coordinators in local communities. Three Environmental Demonstration Stores – “Eco Stores” in Lawrence, KS, Moore, OK, and City of Industry, CA – house an environmental education ”Eco Room” to educate children and adults about environmental issues. Also significant is Wal-Mart’s Missing Children’s network, in which the store’s associates and customers have assisted in the recovery of 88 missing children since 1996.]
