The 2003 'A' List
11The Home Depot Inc.Atlanta, GA(770) 433-8211www.homedepot.comIf you’ve ever embarked upon a do-it-yourself home improvement project, chances are pretty good that you visited the local Home Depot at least once during your venture. As the world’s largest home improvement chain and second-largest retailer after Wal-Mart, Home Depot operates a total of 1,532 stores, including 1,370 Home Depot stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. The remaining numbers include Home Depot Stores in Canada and Mexico, as well as EXPO Design Center stores, Home Depot Landscape Supply, Home Depot Supply, and The Home Depot Floor Stores. These stores collectively consist of about 137 million square feet, and Home Depot owns approximately 82 percent of them. The company’s executive, corporate staff, and financial office occupies approximately 1.77 million square feet of leased and owned space in Atlanta. Home Depot also occupies an aggregate of about 3.3 million square feet for divisional store support centers, subsidiary support centers, and subsidiary customer support centers. Ranked No. 13 on the Fortune 100, Home Depot had sales of $58.2 billion in the fiscal year ending February 2003.[Editors’ Note: Embarking on a transformation of “The Home Depot from a young, decentralized organization toward a more mature and balanced company with predictable and sustainable growth,” the organization is launching a $250 million store remodeling program – intent on streamlining store operations and redeploying gained efficiencies to improve customer service. Look to new point-of-sale systems, self-checkout, and other innovative techniques that position Home Depot to meet the needs of a broad array of under-served home improvement markets. Even more important: It’s easy (therefore, fun) shopping at Home Depot’s organized store lay-out.]
