In many cases, Wal-Mart owns the land associated with leased buildings in which its facilities are located. Total company employment in the United States exceeds 1 million "associates," with an additional 303,000 associates in foreign countries. Store counts include the following for the United States: Wal-Mart Discount Stores, totaling 1,647 stores and 157.7 million square feet; Wal-Mart Supercenters, totaling 1,066 stores and 197.4 million square feet; Neighborhood Markets, totaling 31 stores and 1.4 million square feet; and SAM's Clubs, totaling 500 stores and 61.78 million square feet. Total store count in the international arena brings an additional 1,170 facilities to Wal-Mart's portfolio, and 97.4 million square feet.
[Editors' Note: Don't we all wish we had thought of this - a relatively simple concept that hasn't budged (in philosophy) since the company founders' decision to open a discount store in 1962? Wal-Mart is truly a giant - in concept, in implementation, and in facilities. Who would have guessed that big-box could come in so many facilities forms - all structured for convenience (everything you would want) with great value and great marketing; my favorite: "Store-within-a-Store." In August 2001, Wal-Mart teamed up with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an EnergyStar® partner, promoting energy conservation at its facilities and featuring EnergyStar-labeled, energy-efficient products for consumers. Integrating a skylight/dimming system across its properties has resulted in an annual savings of about 250 million kilowatt-hours a year.]
