HCANashville, TN(615) 344-9551 www.hcahealthcare.comOwning and operating hospitals and other healthcare facilities in 24 states, England, and Switzerland, HCA has recently been able to boost a sagging bottom line by integrating various services. Here, facilities development/operations have come into play to accomplish established goals with $1.2 billion devoted toward facilities spending in 2002, according to information from the Nashville offices. Five new hospitals and 80 modernization projects are under way, with completion slated for this year. The company reports a portfolio of 12 million square feet in 300 office buildings, as well as 60 million square feet in 200 healthcare buildings. Of particular note is HCA's group purchasing organization, HealthTrust Purchasing Group (HPG), which is charged with purchasing the best quality products available in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
[Editors' Note: In supporting one of the largest hospital chains in the United States, the facilities department at HCA believes spending its $1 billion in total capital means designing and constructing buildings and areas within those structures that are easily expandable, rather than covering the expense and disruption to other areas of the hospital when needs arise. Additionally, a water conservation effort is projected to save as much as 8 million gallons of water each year.]
