Fairfax County (VA) Public SchoolsFairfax, VA(703) 246-2991www.fcps.eduThe vision of Fairfax County Public Schools is "to provide a gifted-quality education to every child in an instructional setting appropriate for his or need." As part of this plan, the school district is committed to maintaining high quality within its schools and educational centers that serve a projected 2002-2003 enrollment of 165,956 students. According to the facilities department at Fairfax County Public Schools, the district's property portfolio consists of 14 office buildings, totaling 614,027 square feet, and 234 educational buildings, totaling approximately 23.42 million square feet. With a capital budget of $130 million devoted to facilities in 2002, as well as $26.3 million in operational dollars, the full-time facilities staff of 419 professionals is involved in five new projects, totaling 518,000 square feet, and 17 modernizations, totaling 1.9 million square feet. Of expenditures per student (projected at $9,641 each), approximately 55 percent has been historically dedicated to "Instruction," while 45 percent is relegated to "Other" uses.
[Editors' Note: A list of "Strategic Targets" over the next two years at this public school is inspiring. Although obviously incorporating an emphasis on student achievement, the School Board appears to be focusing on serving a broader range of students with special needs. Continuing attention to technology improvements includes a new web-enabled library system, online courses, wireless laptop labs, and classrooms adequately wired for Internet access and content filtering.]
