The Skyscraper Museum, New York City, had originally planned to hold a lecture series last fall on the World Trade Center at the Windows on the World restaurant on the 106th floor of Tower 1. The considerable research on the twin towers will now be presented as a major exhibition at the New York Historical Society galleries in early February.

Retail Security

Numbers from the National Retail Security Survey suggest that inventory shrinkage and a combination of employee theft, shoplifting, vendor fraud, and administrative error cost the nation’s retailers $32.3 billion in 2000. Conducted by the University of Florida with a funding grant from ADT Security Services Inc., findings revealed that retailers lost 1.75 percent of their total annual sales over the year. “Given that the surveyed portion of the retail economy annually transacts over $1.845 trillion, this percentage of loss is worth more than $32 billion,” explains Richard C. Hollinger, Ph.D. and University criminologist.

“Retailers need to look beyond the selling floor to increase and protect their profits,” notes Mike Snyder, president of ADT Security Services, Boca Raton, FL. “Technologies such as anti-shoplifting systems, digital video surveillance, and point-of-sale monitoring solutions, tied together with remote and central monitoring, will help retailers to address the security lapses that allow these kinds of losses.”
