ASTM Standard to Add Tests for Lead-Based Paint

New protocol will determine if clearance for re-occupancy is obtained. 

ASTM is proposing an international standard for lead-based paint that will provide a visual assessment and sampling protocol to establish whether or not a dust-lead hazard remains after clean-up. The protocol will assist paint inspectors, housing administrators, regulators, and the EPA in assessing clearance for reoccupancy as it pertains to hazards like deteriorated paint chips, surface dust, and painted debris. 

The research conducted by ASTM concluded that with a four wipe sample, it has a 99% probability of coming to the correct conclusion regarding clearance. 

The proposed standard (WK52690, Practice for Clearance Examinations Following Lead Hazard Reduction Activities in Single Family Dwellings, in Individual Units of Multi-Family Dwellings, and in Other Child-Occupied Facilities) is being developed by ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings.)
