Gill Instruments Launches TruMet PW100 Infrared Optical Rain Gauge

This next-generation gauge uses LED lighting and sensors to analyze rain droplets.
Feb. 9, 2026

Gill Instruments announces the launch of the TruMet PW100, an infrared optical rain gauge ideal for renewable energy and environmental monitoring; flood forecasting and early-warning systems; transport, aviation, and infrastructure operations; smart city and urban drainage monitoring and more. The rain gauge is engineered to overcome the challenges associated with mechanical tipping bucket gauges, which are prone to clogging, mechanical drift that requires frequent recalibration, and under-counting during high-intensity rainfall.

TruMet PW100 uses a solid-state optical measurement principle in which LEDs create a beam of light across a defined sensing area, and a receiver monitors interruptions in the beam caused by rainfall. The system then analyzes the size and velocity of droplets to accurately measure accumulation and filter out non-rain interference, such as insects or debris.
