How Landmark Las Vegas Hotels Save Energy and Water

Green goals are within reach for Strip mainstays.

Simple upgrades saved an estimated 8 million kWh and 30 million gallons of water per year for three classic Las Vegas properties as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge.

The Las Vegas Sands Corporation, which owns the Venetian, the Palazzo and the Sands Expo and Convention Center, set a goal in 2011 to reduce energy use across its properties by 20% in 10 years and has achieved a 17% reduction as of the five-year mark, saving more than 500 million kBTU.

Winning savings strategies include:

  • Upgrading guest room appliances and installing 100% LED lighting in all hotel rooms
  • Using low-flow shower heads and faucets in all hotel rooms
  • Installing a wireless lighting control system at the convention center and upgrading the exhibit halls to LED lighting
  • Building an underground water irrigation tunnel and filtration system below the Palazzo’s parking garage to convert groundwater into irrigation water
