Major Damage Suffered in Oklahoma Earthquake

Nov. 7, 2016

Cushing City Manager Steve Spears stated that approximately 50 buildings were destroyed in Sunday's earthquake.

Substantial damage was incurred by dozens of buildings after a 5.0 magnitude earthquake impacted Cushing, Oklahoma. Cushing is a major hub in U.S. oil supply with its 13 pipelines pumping millions of barrels of oil per day, but officials said Monday that no damage has been reported at the oil terminal.

Cushing City Manager Steve Spears announced that 40 to 50 buildings were damaged in Sunday’s earthquake, which was the third in Oklahoma just this year with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater.

Earthquakes are now becoming more frequent of a phenomenon in that particular area, with many field experts pointing to the practice of disposing oil and gas field wastewater deep underground.

In a news conference late Sunday, Cushing Assistant City Manager Jeremy Frazier said only a few minor injuries were reported.
