Green Parking Certification Expands

Jan. 21, 2016

New leadership will grow parking sustainability efforts.

The Green Garage Certification Program will now be administered by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) due to the organization’s acquisition of the Green Parking Council, the previous certification body in charge of the program. GBCI, the organization that oversees the USGBC’s LEED program, will help facilities improve their portfolio beyond the building by utilizing the strategies within the Green Garage program to boost the efficiency and safety of parking structures.

The program, which was developed with the support of industry partners and the International Parking Institute, looks at 48 separate factors to assess parking facility performance, including sustainable technology and design, programs that encourage alternate transportation types, and management practices that cut waste.

“This is a transformational moment for urban parking garages and this exciting collaboration with GBCI solidifies the parking industry’s commitment to sustainable urban transformation. GBCI offers the infrastructures necessary to meet the growing demand for Green Garage Certification and the ability to connect the parking industry to efforts advancing sustainable solutions in communities worldwide,” says John Schmid, Board Chair for the Green Parking Council.
