Ambitious Solar Installation Launches in Washington D.C.

11.4 MW photovoltaic array will be the largest municipal project in the U.S.

Washington D.C. has committed to renewable energy with a new project announced by Mayor Muriel Bowser that will install photovoltaic systems on top of roofs and parking lots of district-owned facilities. The 11.4 megawatt project will increase solar generation capabilities by nearly 70% in the capitol and is expected to save taxpayers over $25 million over the power purchase agreement’s 20-year duration.

The new systems will produce around 3.5% of the electricity required to power the DC Department of General Services’ (DGS) portfolio as well as cut peak demand in the summer by up to 15%. Facilities with solar installations will receive around 20% of their electricity from the renewable source. The project is set to begin immediately and finish construction by the end of 2016.

“This Power Purchase Agreement doubles down on my administration’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability – using district government assets as staging grounds to capture the sun’s energy and power our building portfolio. Beyond renewable energy and cost savings, this project will elevate the district’s local economy, spur small business development and create jobs,” says Mayor Bowser.
