Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has unveiled a new project that will help improve the city’s energy efficiency and economic resiliency, including new requirements for both public and private facilities. The Sustainable City Plan includes both short-term goals that can be accomplished by 2017 as well as aims expected to be reached by 2025 and 2035.
Initial targets include expanding the Better Buildings Challenge to over 60 million square feet, avoiding up to 1,250 GWh of energy use between 2014 and 2017 by using efficiency programs, creating a benchmarking policy to monitor and disclose facility energy use, and developing a policy package comprised of audits and retro-commissioning to help cut energy consumption in large buildings.
In addition, the long-term outcomes expected from the program call for all building types to cut energy use per square foot 14% below the 2013 baseline by 2025 and 30% by 2035, as well as using energy efficiency programs to deliver all of LA’s energy needs while utilizing 15% less power than is currently needed.
