Standards Suing Scandal

Sept. 24, 2013
Three SDOs allege massive copyright infringement.

Three standards development organizations (SDOs) have filed a lawsuit against public.resource.org, alleging a massive copyright infringement.

SDOs underwrite the substantial costs of developing standards by selling and licensing their copyrighted standards, allowing them to remain independent of special interests and to develop recent, high quality guidelines. Public Resource is accused of uploading the standards without authorization.

NFPA, ASTM, and ASHRAE are not suing for monetary damages. They simply want to stop the posting of protected materials so that the SDO funding model remains viable.
