Electric Vehicles to Charge in 20 Minutes

Major improvement to spur adoption of electric vehicles.

A new technical standard for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) now addresses DC charging, which can charge an EV in as little as 20 minutes.

SAE International, a global industry association, recently released J1772: SAE Electric Vehicle and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Couple. The original version of J1772 defined only AC Levels 1 and 2 charge (1.4-1.9 kW) levels, which can charge an EV from 3-7 hours. DC charging draws 40-100 kW to quickly fuel a vehicle.

The voluntary standard represents the future of charging technology and smart grid interaction while addressing the needs of today. Such needs include reduced times at public charging stations and enabling consumers to travel greater distances. These added benefits will further promote the adoption of EVs.
