ADA Compliance Standards Issued on Medical Equipment

Feb. 23, 2017

The disability standards contain criteria that provide design benchmarks for examination tables and chairs, weight scales, radiological and mammography equipment.

New standards for medical diagnostic equipment were issued recently by the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board or Board).

The standards contain minimum technical criteria that provide design benchmarks for examination tables and chairs, weight scales, radiological and mammography equipment and other diagnostic equipment that are accessible to people with disabilities.

The standards also include requirements for equipment that requires transfer from mobility aids and address transfer surfaces, support rails, armrests, and other features.

The MDE Standards will allow independent entry to, use of, and exit from the equipment by individuals with disabilities to the maximum extent possible. The MDE Standards do not impose any mandatory requirements on health care providers or medical device manufacturers.

However, other agencies, referred to as enforcing authorities in the MDE Standards, may issue regulations or adopt policies that require health care providers subject to their jurisdiction to acquire accessible medical diagnostic equipment that complies with the MDE Standards.
