Roll-Up Security Grilles: A Simple Security Solution for Schools
Closing the cafeteria after lunch, locking up expensive equipment in a computer lab, limiting building access during after-school activities—in a school environment, security is a daily assignment. When budgets are tight (and they always are), school staff and building personnel sometimes turn to their own resourcefulness to meet their everyday security needs.
For these schools, using tables to block off hallways during basketball games or covering storage areas with curtains to keep equipment out of sight is not uncommon. In some ways, these makeshift solutions get the job done by visually communicating to others to keep out. But, when it comes to providing real security, tables and curtains just don’t make the grade. For these methods to be effective, staff have to physically move furniture and monitor the area. Visual security is good, but physical security is more effective.
For everyday security situations, schools need simple, budget-friendly solutions that are easy to use and don’t require constant attention from staff. When implementing security measures, it’s important to account for the wellbeing and safety of students. Incorporating sightlines into the design empowers staff to monitor areas effectively and ensure clear pathways during emergencies. In some cases, these measures also need to accommodate airflow, allowing HVAC systems and lighting to function properly.
What security solution can pass all these tests? The correct answer is the roll-up security grille.
The Security Grille Study Guide
Roll-up security grilles provide a versatile and practical solution for schools that need reliable security and controlled access. Grille designs typically feature interlocking aluminum rods or bars that form a continuous grid-like curtain that opens and closes. When open, the grille rolls up and stores inside compact housing above the opening, keeping it out of the way. When closed, the grille descends to cover the doorway or opening and locks in place to create a secure barrier.
For both maintenance personnel and staff, the operation of a roll-up security grille is simple and straightforward. Standard models feature a manual or motorized mechanism for user-friendly operation. Manual versions often use a counterbalanced system, while motorized models are powered by an electric motor that can be operated with a switch, remote control, or even configured with alarm-triggered activation. Multiple locking options include a guide-mounted interlock, padlocked slide bolts and chain keepers, and master key cylinder locks. For maintenance personnel, master key locks are especially appealing, as they solve the additional security issue of keeping track of multiple keys.
Other features and benefits that make security grilles an attractive option for school settings include:
- Cost-effectiveness: First (and often foremost for schools), roll-up security grilles are affordable. Their quick installation, basic mechanical designs, and minimal required maintenance help keep their total cost of ownership low.
- Ease of use: The operation of roll-up security grilles generally requires little effort, making them particularly welcome in schools where staff have been moving around furniture to create physical barriers. The roll-up mechanism allows for rapid open and close, making it easy to secure or open an area quickly.
- Durability and intrusion deterrence: Constructed from robust steel and aluminum, roll-up security grilles are designed to endure the incidental contact common in high-traffic school spaces, as well as prevent intentional attempts at intrusion.
- Visibility and ventilation: With open curtain design options that include straight rows and columns, brick patterns, and polycarbonate panels, roll-up security grilles maintain visibility for student supervision and allow for air circulation.
- Space efficiency: Roll-up grilles are custom built to fit the exact opening size, so they take up minimal space when retracted, making them ideal for areas in schools with limited space.
- Customizability: Grilles can be customized for size, color, and finish to match the aesthetics of different spaces. This customization ensures they complement school decor and showcase school colors while also providing security.
- Emergency response options: To address safety in schools, models are available with emergency response. When triggered by a fire alarm, a power failure, or if the grille’s emergency push-button is activated, the grille immediately moves to the open position with no electricity required. This feature is particularly desirable for schools using the security grille to control traffic flow in hallways. In case of emergency, the grille automatically opens to clear the hallway for rapid exit, such as creating paths of egress in the event of a fire. Some roll-up grille manufacturers even offer operating systems with fully customizable digital controls that can be determined by a building’s specific emergency management protocol.
With a blend of security, convenience, and adaptability, roll-up security grilles offer a practical, cost-effective solution for schools looking to enhance safety without compromising on functionality or aesthetics.
A Scalable Security Solution
Schools that have adopted roll-up grilles for their security needs find they are simple, easy-to-integrate solutions for a variety of situations. For example, at the end of the school day or during after-hours activities like sporting events, securing main entrances and hallways is often necessary to prevent unauthorized access and provide protection for school staff still working in the building. Corridors just beyond gymnasiums and auditoriums are also ideal locations for security grilles, as they keep spectators in designated areas without staff having to worry about who might be wandering around the building unsupervised.
In addition to controlling access to space, security grilles can be used to lock down equipment and storage areas. For sports equipment, musical instruments, computers, and other valuable resources, roll-up grilles are a space-saving solution that quickly and effectively protects assets while still providing visibility into the space. This makes it easy for school staff to visually account for items at a glance without unlocking and opening the grille.
Security is a concern in every school, but not every school has the budget for a sophisticated protection system. Roll-up security grilles offer a simple, affordable solution for schools to better manage their day-to-day security needs.
Roll-up Security Grille Is a Game-changer for St. Jude School
St. Jude School in Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, is a Catholic elementary school that serves students from Pre-K through grade 8. Host to sporting events and after-school activities like basketball games, the school is routinely tasked with keeping visitors in designated areas to ensure the rest of the building remains secure.
Recently, before games or other events, school staff would turn a table on its side in front of a hallway to prevent people from wandering into other parts of the building. Aside from providing a visual prompt to visitors that the area was off limits, the tipped-over table offered little in terms of physical security, as anyone could simply walk around the makeshift barrier. After consulting a local door manufacturer and overhead door dealer, A&B Door Sales, Inc., the school decided it was time for a more robust solution, which led to the installation of a durable roll-up security grille.
“We’re thrilled to have the roll-up grille at our school,” said Sister Ellen Fischer, member of the Sisters of Christian Charity congregation and principal of St. Jude School. “The addition enhances our ability to manage foot traffic during after-school events and bolsters our daily security efforts for the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.”
Head of St. Jude School maintenance Joe Bayley added that the installation and location of the grille are ideal. “The new grille fit right where we needed it—right where we used to put the table,” said Bayley. “Installation went smoothly, and the grille is so well hidden in the ceiling you don’t even realize that it’s there when it’s up. It rolls down seamlessly and has key access on both sides. It’s so easy. You just put the key in with no instructions or training needed.”
Bayley explained that the school has security cameras and glass-breaking alarms, but what it really needed was a way to contain visitors and control access to certain areas of the school. He notes that since the installation of the grille, continuous camera monitoring and table setup are no longer necessary. “Now,” said Bayley, “we can just close and lock the grille, and we don’t have to worry about it.”
