LED Tube Lights Provide Great Light & Energy Savings at Pasadena City College

Aug. 1, 2012
“Pasadena City College’s decision to retrofit with Seesmart tube lights has not only saved them energy, it’s also saved them the cost and trouble of frequent light replacement,” remarked Ray Sjolseth, President of Seesmart, Inc.  “PCC will be able to enjoy their new lighting for years without needing to lift a finger for maintenance.”

Pasadena City College (PCC) in Pasadena, California has an impressive track record of environmental leadership.  When PCC decided to embark on a lighting retrofit, it sought energy-efficient lighting products that would save money while providing a long-term lighting solution.  PCC chose Seesmart, Inc. as its lighting partner for this project.

The star of PCC’s lighting retrofit project was Seesmart’s 4-foot, 15-watt LED tube light.  This product is a more efficient, safer, healthier, lower-maintenance, long-lived alternative to a fluorescent tube light.  It draws less than half the power of a standard 4-foot fluorescent tube light, is shatter-proof, contains no mercury, emits no UV radiation, turns on and off instantly, and does not require a ballast.  It is rated for up to 50,000 hours of operation and is covered by a 5-year warranty.

By early 2012, PCC had installed over 34,000 Seesmart tube lights in classrooms, parking structures, administrative offices, and hallways.  The LED tube lights reduced the lighting power consumption of these areas by over 50% while providing clean, clear light.  Throughout the campus, light levels held steady or increased after the installation of the LEDs.  In fact, PCC was able to de-lamp its hallway fixtures from three 32-watt fluorescent tube lights to a single 15-watt LED tube light.  Through this de-lamping, PCC reduced the lighting energy consumption of its hallways by over 84% while maintaining IES-recommended light levels.

Overall, PCC’s upgrade to LEDs has produced savings of an estimated 3.7 million kilowatt-hours and $720,000 per year.  PCC’s carbon footprint has been reduced by 5 million pounds annually.  The retrofit project has also enabled the college to qualify for a massive rebate from Pasadena Water Power.
