To maximize safety when attacks occur, NFPA® has developed NFPA 3000®, Standard for an Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response (ASHER) Program. The standard outlines how to organize an ASHER program, which also aims to reduce or eliminate the risks and impacts on organizations or communities affected by such events.
NFPA 3000 isn’t just for fire protection services; it’s for all safety planners, first responders, and policy makers. This includes fire, EMS, police, school superintendents, facility managers, building owners, safety officers, safety and security consultants, loss control/risk safety officers, risk managers, emergency services directors, and federal, state, city, and municipal government officials. All of these stakeholders need to be at the table and working together.
Experience has shown that key individuals, with accurate information, can greatly affect outcomes during these emergencies. The purpose of NFPA 3000 is to identify requirements to organize, manage, and sustain an ASHER program. These programs aim to reduce or eliminate the risks, effects, and impacts on the organizations or communities that experience such trauma.
