The DOE has filed a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to create a new efficiency standard for light bulbs sold in the U.S. The rule would apply to LED and compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and take effect in 2020. The DOE notes that currently only LED options would meet the proposed efficiency rule, but greener options are expected to be developed before then.
Comments from the public will be accepted through April 12, 2016 with the DOE expecting to have a final rule effective by January 1, 2017. The new requirements are projected to help save over $9 billion on energy costs and eliminate more than 52 million metric tons of carbon emissions over the 30-year life of the standard.
