While most LEDs offer energy savings over older lighting technology, a new report from the DOE shows that linear and low-bay/high-bay retrofits offer the greatest potential for future energy savings in commercial and industrial applications. Total installations of LED lights are led by A-type lamps, with directional lamps and luminaires as the second most commonly installed LED type. The report notes that in 2014, energy savings from LEDs totaled about $1.4 billion, but notes that if all applications had switched immediately to the best available LEDs, savings could have been as high as $49 billion.
The report, Adoption of Light-Emitting Diodes in Common Lighting Applications, shows that while the amount of LED installations more than quadrupled from 2012 to 2014, market penetration is still just 3%. Additionally, the report’s authors note that performance gain increases have recently allowed LED options to compete with other, lower-priced technology in linear and low-bay/high-bay applications.
