DLC help wanted: Expert sought to define controls benefits beyond energy
The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has issued an RFP (request for proposal) seeking an expert in the lighting controls space that can conduct a study to identify tangible benefits of controls beyond energy efficiency. Interested parties from the LED and solid-state lighting (SSL) sectors should act quickly because responses to the RFP are due Mar. 1 and if you have a question for the DLC about the opportunity, ask by Feb. 24. The work is to be focused on NLCs (networked lighting controls) and will ultimately help define potential ROI pathways in office buildings, hospitals and healthcare facilities, educational buildings, and warehouse and industrial facilities.

“We know from anecdotal reports that advanced building controls can boost savings for facility owners and managers, as well as improve the experience of building occupants. The scope of the non-energy benefits of these systems is not adequately represented in the financial decision-making process by individual owners and managers, or by energy-efficiency incentive programs, however,” said DLC executive director and CEO Christina Halfpenny said. “This project will develop a method for determining the financial value these benefits provide to occupants, managers, and society, as a way to better inform decision-making with regard to investments in advanced controls.”
The DLC said it hoped to award a contract by Mar. 12. The results of the work will help guide energy-efficiency programs in incentivizing investment in NLCs that will deliver additional benefits. The project will further cover some advanced controls such as connected outdoor lighting around a building, and integrated building systems.
