Notable achievements by four research and development project teams were honored last week at "Transformations in Lighting," the eighth annual US Department of Energy (DOE) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) R&D Workshop, held this year in San Diego, California. The three-day event brought together 350 researchers, manufacturers, and other industry insiders and observers interested in keeping up to date on the latest SSL developments.

According to Jim Brodrick, DOE’s Lighting Program Manager, the honorees exemplify the rapid progress being achieved in SSL technology. "These companies demonstrate the innovative spirit that is propelling this industry forward," he said. "Their work will accelerate commercialization of highly efficient LED and OLED products for general illumination."

    • Cree, Inc. was recognized for demonstrating an SSL luminaire that integrates novel LED components with a new driver topology boasting a 90.6% driver efficiency.
    • Lightscape Materials developed high efficiency red and green phosphors featuring excellent thermal characteristics and low-cost preparation methods.
    • Osram Sylvania demonstrated a small form factor LED retrofit lamp that achieved 414 lumens and 92 lm/W with a warm white output and CRI of 90.
    • Universal Display Corporation demonstrated two phosphorescent OLED luminaire systems: the first, with system efficacy of 51 lm/W, can snap into Armstrong's TechZone Ceiling System; the second, a 15 x 15 cm panel, reached a key milestone of 66 lm/W at a luminance of 1,000 cd/m2.
The DOE publishes an R&D plan for solid-state lighting which is updated every year.
