• DOE awards research funds for OLED projects

The DOE has awarded Small Business Innovation Research phase II grants to Physical Optics Corporation and Universal Display.
    Sept. 10, 2007
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants targeting advances in solid-state lighting (SSL) technology.

These Phase II awards will expand on Phase I results and will enable the evaluation of the commercial potential of new technology.

    Recipient: Physical Optics Corporation (POC)
Title: Highly Efficient Organic Light-Emitting Devices for General Illumination
Summary: This project will develop a new High-Efficiency OLED (HE-OLED) system by forming POC’s holographic Light Shaping Diffuser on a new OLED substrate structure.
Phase II of this ongoing project will focus on development of OLED substrates with suitable encapsulated light scattering structures and the technology for their mass production at low cost.

    Recipient: Universal Display Corporation (UDC)
Title: WOLEDs Containing Two Broad Emitters
Summary: This project will continue development of white OLEDs with a simple architecture containing only two emitters and/or as few organic materials as necessary. The Phase II devices will demonstrate color rendering indexes (CRI) of >75, and efficacy of 60 lm/W at 1,000 cd/m2.

The SBIR program seeks to increase the participation of small businesses in federal R&D. To learn more about the DOE Office of Science SBIR program, visit http://sbir.er.doe.gov/sbir/.
