What Your Occupants Really Want in a Bathroom

Aug. 31, 2017

Your entire facility or business will be judged solely on restroom experience.

You can update to the latest and greatest hand dryer. You could install an automatic toilet that saves gallons of water. But what your building occupants truly want may be something you haven’t ever thought of.

Bradley Corp conducted a survey called the 2017 Healthy Hand Washing Survey. In it, over 1,000 American adults were surveyed on public restrooms, germs, colds and the flu. These are the results.

People just want bathrooms that that are clean and orderly.

Jammed or empty toilet paper dispensers are the number one aggravator, with clogged or unflushed toilets following closely behind. Broken latches on doors and partitions are the third most irritating for bathroom users. If you answer these three antagonizers, you will be well on your way to impressing visitors and everyday users.

Occupants will wash hands if you provide soap.

Nearly unanimous, 97% of Americans believe it’s important to wash your hands after using a public restroom. The most common reason for not washing hands after using the toilet, though, is that there is no soap left in the dispenser or if there is an absence of paper towels. Keep a fully stocked handwashing department in your bathrooms at all hours of the day to stop the spread of germs.

Your entire facility or business will be judged solely on restroom experience

Nearly every building offers a public restroom area, but they vary widely in quality. Almost 70% of Americans say they have had an unpleasant experience due to the condition of the facility. Nearly all Americans (92%) see a direct association between the quality of a company’s products and services and the quality of its restrooms. People will think twice about going using your building for business if they have had an nasty bathroom experience prior.
