Product Category Rules for Asphalt Roofing

Nov. 21, 2014

Framework allows users a better look at roofing's environmental impact.

Looking to standardize the measurement and reporting of asphalt roofing’s impact on the environment, ASTM International and The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturer’s Association (ARMA) have released product category rules (PCRs) for roof products in North America.

Asphalt Shingles, Built-Up Asphalt Membrane Roofing, and Modified Bituminous Membrane Roofing will cover shingles placed over underlayment and low-slope assemblies with combinations of factory-produced, asphalt-saturated or coated base sheets, ply sheets, and cap sheets together with viscous asphalt coatings, adhesives, and surfacings. The PCRs are expected to provide a uniform system for asphalt roofing manufacturers to develop environmental product declarations (EPDs), which are verified documents reporting the expected environmental performance based on expected lifecycle. Using EPDs, consumers will now be able to easily compare the environmental impact of similar roofing products.

“This PCR is a significant, universal resource for the asphalt roofing industry. It provides asphalt roofing manufacturers with a way to collect, measure, and communicate data pertaining to expected product environmental impacts through an EPD, giving consumers and industry professionals new insight into asphalt roofing materials,” says Reed Hitchcock, executive vice president of ARMA.

The new guidelines can be accessed via the ASTM International website
