EPA Rule to Curb Use of HFC Refrigerants

Agency looks to reduce GHG emissions with advanced refrigeration technologies.

The EPA has announced several new rules designed to cut down the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in refrigeration and air conditioning applications. The new steps will ensure a smooth transition from potent greenhouse gases to more climate-friendly alternatives.

The first rule proposed improves the ways that refrigerants are sold, handled, recovered, and recycled. It would apply to ozone-depleting and HFCs refrigerants, with the EPA estimating that 7 million metric tons of CO2 emissions could be avoided by 2025 with the rule’s implementation. Additionally, the EPA plans to implement a change to the status for certain high global warming potential HFCs to unacceptable where safer options are available, as well as approving several new climate-friendly alternatives for industry applications.
