With the constant focus on electric vehicles and sustainable transportation, a swap to the propane-powered cab should come as no surprise.  Yellow Cab of Pittsburgh, a division of the Pittsburgh Transportation Group (PTG), is introducing propane-powered taxi cabs to Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl will be on hand around 11:45 a.m. at the cab drivers annual barbecue Wednesday, May 30 at the PTG garage on Preble Avenue in Manchester to see the first group of an anticipated 55 cabs to undergo the conversion.

"Besides reducing pollution," says Jamie Campolongo, president of PTG, "the conversion will also provide a significant savings to our drivers who lease the cabs and must pay for their own fuel.  With the current price of gasoline, we're talking a savings of about $1.40 a gallon.  That could be as much as $2,300 a year or more."

"Additionally, based on the statistics we have received and at least 50 cab conversions," added Campolongo, "we expect to reduce the carbon footprint by about 500 tons annually."

Transportation has been seeing significant shifts towards green initiatives and these latest cabs could lead the way toward increased energy savings and sustainability.
