Is Your Roof Ready for Winter?

As winter storms and freezing temperatures loom on the horizon, it’s time for any facility manager or building owner to ask the question – Is my roof ready for this?

As winter storms and freezing temperatures loom on the horizon, it’s time for any facility manager or building owner to ask the question – Is my roof ready for this?

Roofing is the 8th most dangerous occupation according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, making it more dangerous than police and fire protection occupations.  Unless you have access to an inhouse roofing professional, it may be time to seek out a professional roofing contractor to assess your winter roof situation.

The Chicago Roofing Contractors Association has a few key areas to consider for your winter roof status, regardless of how you choose to handle them –

Animal Damage.  During this time of year, squirrels and raccoons tend to look for warm places to stay, namely in your roof and attic.

Debris in gutters and downspouts.  The fall season brings leaves, pine needles, sticks and other debris into your gutter system.  Call a professional roofing contractor to clear your gutters or install a leaf guard system.

Prepare for the next round of extreme weather. Homes and buildings were hit with wind, rain and hail this summer. Is your roof in good enough shape to withstand the upcoming harsh winter weather?  Speak to a roofing professional about how to prevent problems this winter.

Regular inspection and maintenance.  Roof inspection is an inexpensive way to have peace of mind this winter.  If your roof is new or more than 10 years old, consider a maintenance agreement with a licensed professional roofing contractor to prevent problems before winter starts.  Schedule either an annual or bi-annual inspection and maintenance program.

Protect your safety and the roof’s warranty by hiring a professional. Professionals know how to do it right – and safely. Besides the obvious safety risks, climbing onto and installing anything onto your roof may void the manufacturer’s warranty.
