The EPA has recognized 74 leading Energy Star organizations for achievements in energy efficiency across their building portfolios in 2010, 50 of which are first time Energy Star Leaders.

The combined efforts of these Energy Star Leader organizations have prevented the equivalent of more than 460,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually and saved more than $100 million a year.

To become an Energy Start Leader, an organization must meet one of two milestone qualifications:

        1) A 10% improvement in energy performance across the entire building portfolio, with subsequent recognition given each 10% improvement thereafter.

        2) Become a “top performer”, requiring the buildings in the organization’s portfolio to perform in the top 25% of comparable buildings nationwide.

Of worthy note at this time are Blue Mountain School District, Pennsylvania and DeKalb County Central Unified School District, Indiana.  These Energy Star Leaders have improved energy efficiency across their building portfolios by 40% and 50%, respectively.

A full list of Energy Star Leaders as of December 31, 2010, is available.
