The DOE will include twenty fuel cell vehicles from Mercedes-Benz as part of the Technology Validation project.  This project will bring vehicles with the latest technology advancements to U.S. roadways and allow the DOE to validate these technologies for market compatibility and acceptance.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Technology Validation project works with fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations under real-world operating conditions to demonstrate advances in research. A total of 152 vehicles and 24 fueling stations have reported date to the project. Vehicles from General Motors, Ford, Hyundai Kia, and Mercedes-Benz have traveled over 2.8 million miles for research data.

Vehicles from Mercedes-Benz will be delivered to select customers in California before the end of the year, with the full 70 vehicle fleet to be deployed by 2012.  Fuel cell vehicle commercialization is expected to follow as early as 2015.
