New Clinic a Homerun with Veterans

Sept. 13, 2010
The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital team up to give veterans a boost.

The Home Base Program, which assists Afghanistan and Iraq veterans, hit a homerun with 4,000-square-feet of newly designed space. A venture between the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Red Sox Foundation, the clinic’s atmosphere promotes healing to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders and traumatic brain injuries.

The facility includes program areas for clinical, research, education, and family support. Architectural elements were carefully design to be simple and welcoming to generate a soothing environment for caregivers, patients, and family alike. Through veteran input, subtle shades of green were selected to honor their military service. The main reception desk has baseball bats incorporated into the design, a nod to the Red Sox Foundation’s support.

“We are honored to be part of this significant effort to provide help to our returning servicemen and servicewomen,” says Joseph Flynn, senior associate at Margulies Perruzzi Architects. “The design of the Home Base Program space will provide a comforting place for our veterans and the medical caregivers that help them.”
