BOMA Poised to Adopt Standards as ANSI Accredited Standards

March 10, 2010

BOMA International is beginning the process of renewing the designation of an American National Standard for its long-respected floor measurement standard for offices, Office Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement and Calculating Rentable Area. The standard was first published by BOMA in 1915 and has been officially an accredited American National Standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) since 1956.

As part of the ANSI accreditation process, BOMA is soliciting anyone with an interest in voting on whether the standard should be ANSI accredited. Balloting will begin March 15 and will conclude May 15.

Additionally, BOMA is considering accrediting Gross Areas of a Building: Methods of Measurement with ANSI, and will be using the same ballot time frame as for the office floor measurement standard for voting.

The initiation of the process to renew the ANSI designation for the Office Buildings: Standard Methods of Measurement and Calculating Rentable Area and to obtain the ANSI designation for the Gross Areas of a Building: Methods of Measurement standard marks the second step of the development of six new floor measurement standards by BOMA and its partners in the real estate industry, including those for retail, multi-unit residential, mixed-use, industrial, office, and gross measured building area

Any person with interest in participating in the voting process for either standard should contact David P. Tyree, director of codes and standards for BOMA International at 202-326-6357 or [email protected] to obtain an official ballot. This must be completed prior to March 15.
