The aim of this multidiscipline healthcare facility was to increase accessibility by locating closer to patients' homes, improve the overall experience of patients and their families, and acquire new patients. In addition, the facility was designed to offer a relaxed and comfortable patient experience while maximizing efficiencies for healthcare providers and staff.
Special Design Features
The 2-story glass-and-brick center negotiates a sloping site to provide separate dedicated entrances for an advanced ambulatory surgery facility at the lower level and a new clinical space for Grand Rapids Ophthalmology at the upper level. Hospitality areas are located along the glass façade to invite the natural light in and allow patients and visitors views to the exterior. The second-floor loft-like exposed ceiling and floating "cloud" discs on rods add detail to the space for visual balance and acoustical support. A variety of "schemes" - from "robust" in the waiting areas and spa to "neutral" in exam areas and "healing and restful" in treatment rooms - help distinguish different areas and enhance the patient experience.
Design/Construction Challenge
With occupancy scheduled just 1 year from breaking ground, the team had a fast-track delivery schedule. Using Workstage's lean, disciplined process and a globally scaled supply chain to drive out the costs and ensure that materials arrived on time, the center was ready for surgery on time and on budget.
