NAIMA Touts Benefits of Rock and Slag Wool Insulation

Organization’s new brochure identifies the insulation as a sustainable choice

The Alexandria, VA-based National American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) is helping increase knowledge of rock and slag wool insulation among commercial facility and residential building owners. The brochure, “Rock and Slag Wool Insulation: Sustainable Choices for Conserving Energy and Preserving the Environment,” is available free of charge for download at the organization’s website (www.naima.org).

Along with its definition and explanation of the construction of rock and slag wool insulation, the brochure explains the wide array of benefits for building owners, specifiers, and builders. NAIMA identifies the following four key performance characteristics:

  • Outstanding thermal performance. Because loose-fill rock and slag wool insulation resists settling, the R-value doesn’t deteriorate over time and thermal performance is maintained.
  • Excellent fire resistance. No harsh and potentially dangerous chemical fire retardants are necessary to make rock and slag wool insulation non-combustible (a natural characteristic of the products). According to NAIMA, the insulation can resist temperatures in excess of 2,000 degrees F.
  • Excellent sound absorption. The fibrous structure and high density of rock and slag wool insulation enable it to reduce sound transmission when used in wall systems.
  • Mold, fungi, and bacteria resistant. Because rock and slag wool insulation is not organic, it resists the growth of mold, fungi, and bacteria.
