The new Hauptman-Woodward Institute’s Structural Biology Research Center doubled the size of its former space in a move to attract new scientists and funding. It houses more than 70 scientists, a number expected to double over the next few years.

Special Design Feature
The project created three distinct spaces: laboratory space, office space, and a connecting 3-story atrium space. It is the first building in western New York designed under the Intl. Building Code requirements for seismic design, including connections designed and tested in accordance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s requirements.

Design/Construction Challenge
Energy conservation played a central role. The project team integrated control systems to maximize energy savings and to reduce maintenance costs over the life of the building. High-performance systems include integrated facility management systems for security access, intrusion detection, and closed-circuit monitoring; energy management, life safety, HVAC, and specialized laboratory ventilation and temperature control; specialized lighting in the laboratories and atrium; high-capacity telecommunications and networking systems for institutional and global connectivity; and a 450kW emergency generator to power life-safety and critical laboratory functions.
