2006 Project Innovations recipient, submitted by Stroud and Co.

Star Software provides innovative solutions through combining technology, process-engineering tools, and best practices; a headquarters building that delivered innovation was a must for the organization.

The new facility redefines the “smart-building” concept. An advanced computer system controls and manages all systems in the building. From security to lighting, and from HVAC to the plasma-screen monitors, the environment of the entire building is constantly monitored and adjusted. Star’s role as a key vendor to the U.S. Air Force and other Department of Defense (DOD) entities requires that its new building meet or exceed DOD security requirements.

Special Design Feature
Star Software’s technology defines the headquarters building; its infrastructure includes more than 10 miles of Cat-6 communications cabling, as well as several miles of low-voltage cabling for controlling door locks, cameras, fingerprint pads, and other devices to ensure high levels of security. Smart-card technology allows occupants to have personalized access to various regions within the building.

Design/Construction Challenge
An eye-catching, high-tech, contemporary design flows through the building and conceals a stringent, DOD-approved security system. Entrance hardware controlled by retina scanners and fingerprint scans are just several of the high-tech security features, which are monitored and controlled by the facility’s computer system.
