Cleaning Industry Research Institute hails standards as a step in the right direction
The Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI), a not-for-profit research organization dedicated to the development and distribution of reliable information and standards related to the cleaning and maintenance industry, is offering help to green cleaning certification programs. ManageMen (www.ManageMen.com) and Green Seal (www.greenseal.org) are being hailed by CIRI as exactly the kind of industry initiative needed to promote public interest in scientific research and the connection between cleaning and healthy indoor environments.“The movement to create a cleaning industry research institute is gaining steam quickly,” says Jim Harris Sr., interim chairman for CIRI. The two proposals from ManageMen and Green Seal are being enthusiastically welcomed. “We see them as additional evidence of the increasing demand for a new a new approach to cleaning and maintenance practices based on scientific research and the application of approved procedures that enhance public health,” he explains.CIRI is not planning to provide the certification. “Rather, our goal will be identify and instigate the type of research that can help support and provide scientific criteria for these and other certification programs,” says Harris. CIRI’s objective in helping is to provide credible research so standards-setting organizations can develop and disseminate cleaning and maintenance best practices. CIRI is currently in the early development stages, with subcommittees working to finalize the organization’s vision and mission, create first-year goals and budgets, and write bylaws. These will be presented to the CIRI Steering Committee for approval at their second meeting on June 21 and June 22. CIRI will then schedule a major industry meeting in the fall, to introduce the institute to the overall JanSan industry.
