The Alexandria, VA-based American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) Intl. has recently published a report titled Business Continuity Guideline: A Practical Approach for Emergency Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Disaster Recovery. This 48-page guideline outlines processes and activities to assist in the creation, assessment, and maintenance of a comprehensive plan for use in the event of a crisis. Information is provided on:
- Readiness, prevention, response, and recovery/resumption.
- Testing and training.
- Evaluation and maintenance.
The guideline is divided into two parts, the first of which provides step-by-step guidance for the preparation and development of a plan. Part Two details implementation and maintenance requirements, as well as the necessary tasks to ensure the document remains relevant and executable, growing as an organization’s needs evolve.
According to the guideline, “It is no longer enough to draft a response plan that anticipates naturally, accidentally, or intentionally caused disaster or emergency scenarios. Today’s threats require the creation of an on-going, interactive process that serves to assure the continuation of an organization’s core activities before, during, and most importantly, after a major crisis event.”
