GSA Installs Enterprise Energy Management System From Power Measurement

Aug. 13, 2004
NASHVILLE, TN  — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has chosen an enterprise energy management ("EEM") system from Power Measurement to help cut energy-related costs and improve power reliability across a number of its properties in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Initiated by GSA's Energy Center of Expertise, the pilot project uses ION® intelligent energy meters and software connected over the agency's internal Ethernet network to arm each GSA building manager with the customized information needed to drive best energy practices and comply with federal energy conservation mandates."The project currently encompasses metering on the main power feeds to ten GSA owned and operated properties, including Postal Square, the U.S. Courthouse and ICC Customs building," said Steve White of the Energy Center of Expertise. "The facilities were chosen based on their large footprint and potential for energy-related savings. The EEM system automatically collects real-time and interval energy data and reports on trends and conditions. This will help facility staff easily benchmark and compare building performance, identify energy and O&M savings opportunities, execute conservation measures and verify results."White envisions the EEM system supporting peak demand shaving and enterprise-wide energy aggregation for utility contract optimization. Additionally, power quality and equipment condition monitoring are expected to maximize reliability and reduce operations and maintenance costs. Following the initial evaluation, GSA is looking to expand the system to include other federal buildings, sub-metering of floors in each facility, and fully integrated metering of water, air, gas, steam and emissions. Power Measurement is providing turnkey engineering, installation and project management services on all aspects of the system.
