July 25, 2003
UC Berkeley Extension has announced its fall lineup of courses in the Certificate Program in Facilities Management. The certificate program, a seven-course series offered year-round in San Francisco, Berkeley, and other locations around the Bay Area, is designed to equip facilities professionals with the information and skills needed to meet the increasingly diverse challenges of the field.Courses offered this fall cover a wide range of topics. Facilities Management: Strategic Planning and Organization (Sept. 3-Nov.12) teaches how to run a facilities management department and ensure that long- and short-term facility planning is aligned with organizational objectives and building user needs. Facilities Construction and Project Management (Sept. 4-Nov. 6) looks at overseeing facility construction jobs, with visits to an actual work site and guest lectures by representatives of contracting, architectural, and project management firms. Facilities Management: Operations and Maintenance (Sept. 6-Nov. 1) deals with the core task of providing building and equipment service, focusing on the skills that are needed and the best methods to use. Facilities Management Systems and Technology (Nov. 1-Dec. 13) examines the infrastructural mechanisms—from telecommunication and information technologies to energy management and climate control systems—that give meaning to the word facility. In future terms, the required courses, Introduction to Facilities Management and Facilities Planning and Design, will be offered, along with a wide selection of electives. The program’s curriculum was developed with the cooperation of the International Facility Management Association. Course credits may be applied to continuing maintenance requirements for IFMA certified facilities managers (CFMs).Extension offers an “open house” information session attended by facilities management faculty, during which attendees can find out more about the program and ask questions. The session is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, at UC Berkeley Extension Downtown Center, 425 Market St., 8th Floor, in San Francisco.
