The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation Announces Opening of New Exhibit At the World Financial Center Winter Garden

April 7, 2003
The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation today announced the opening of a new exhibit at the World Financial Center Winter Garden, “From Recovery to Renewal: the Public Process of Rebuilding the World Trade Center Site and Creating a Permanent Memorial”.  The exhibit is the third in a series of exhibitions designed by the LMDC to educate and involve the public in the planning process for the World Trade Center site.   The initial exhibit, “Plans in Progress” displayed the nine proposals released in December 2003 and attracted more than 100,000 visitors.   The new exhibit tracks the planning process for the site and features new renditions of the selected design: Memory Foundations by Studio Daniel Libeskind.  LMDC Chairman John C. Whitehead said, “This new exhibit encourages the public’s continued involvement and celebrates the contributions of all the many constituencies who have been invaluable in guiding the complex rebuilding planning process.”  LMDC Interim President Kevin Rampe said, “The exhibit tracks the rebuilding efforts at the site from the tragedy to the recent selection of Studio Daniel Libeskind’s design.  It vividly demonstrates the extent public input informed the creation of the design and its selection, while reminding us how far we’ve come and the work that lies ahead.”The new exhibit spans 198 linear feet and is divided topically along the north and south ground floor walls of the Winter Garden’s atrium.  The south wall of the exhibit includes historic elements such as a recovered fragment of the 1993 memorial, pieces of World Trade Center steel, actual handwritten comment cards, and unsolicited proposals.  It also incorporates four video screens that run continuous footage of press conferences and other events, and ten electronic LED screens continually flashing actual public comment.  The north wall explores Studio Daniel Libeskind’s Memory Foundations design for the World Trade Center site through six illustrated panels that include updated renderings of the design concept and a revised version of Libeskind’s original 1:40 scale model. From Recovery to Renewal will be on display from April 7, 2003 through May 31, 2003 at the World Financial Center Winter Garden, adjacent to the World Trade Center site. The exhibit will be open to the public daily, including holidays, from 7 am to 11pm.
