Providence Firm Among Elite Group Tapped

May 15, 2002

Providence, RI – In an indication of its growing reputation as one of the country’s premiere construction law firms, Little, Bulman, Medeiros & Whitney has been engaged by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority as outside counsel to handle legal claims arising from one of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project’s most complicated contracts.  Little, Bulman, Medeiros & Whitney was hired along with selected other prominent firms from around the nation as part of a process by the MTA to ensure expert representation on contracts involving especially complex engineering and construction.

“The Big Dig is one of the most complex highway projects in American History,” said managing partner, Christopher H. Little.  “We’re extremely proud that when the MTA needed a firm to handle one of the most involved pieces of it, they came to Little, Bulman, Medeiros & Whitney.”

Little, Bulman, Medeiros & Whitney will handle disputes that develop from the contract that encompasses the interchange of the Massachusetts Turnpike and the Southeast Expressway.  This contract involves some of the most intricate work in the entire Big Dig project, including extensive “tunnel jacking” – a process rarely used in this country involving the casting in the field of very large segments of concrete vehicular tunnel sections, and the jacking of these tunnel sections underground, beneath functioning rail lines serving thousands of commuters in and out of Boston’s South Station every day.

“Being awarded a contract of this magnitude is both gratifying and a great responsibility,” said John Bulman, a partner in the firm.  “It is a reflection of all the hard work the members of this firm have done to make Little, Bulman, Medeiros & Whitney a national leader in construction law.  The size, significance and complexity of this project will demand the very best of us.”

“The issues involved, while not necessarily unique in construction law, are extremely complicated,” said Chris Whitney, a partner in the firm.  “What is unique is the size of the contract, both in terms of the cost and the complexity of the contract scope of work.”
