I’m constantly surprised by the incredible innovations in smart living technology. I can buy a whole week’s worth of groceries, then adjust the temperature and see who’s at the door—all with the touch of a finger or the sound of my voice.
These technologies are now making their way into commercial and institutional buildings too, which is both startling and super convenient. I love that I can do intake paperwork for doctor’s appointments on a tablet now instead of wasting paper.

Hotel rooms are embracing individual controls too—staff writer Sarah Kloepple discovered at Lightfair that one vendor is looking at integrating Alexa into the ceilings of guest rooms.
You could order room service or set up a wake-up call by simply issuing commands to the ceiling. Another Lightfair vendor introduced a smart fan that’s tough enough for commercial applications—it monitors the temperature in the space and scales fan operation up or down accordingly.
Tech features targeted at individual occupants are becoming such a fixture of everyday life that you can even have Alexa-enabled devices read you BUILDINGS headlines alongside any other news updates you subscribe to.

Now that it’s peak trade show season, I can’t wait to see what NeoCon and the annual BOMA International Conference & Expo will have to offer in the smart living space. Last year’s BOMA show featured my all-time favorite expo floor discovery—a security robot named SCOT.
