How Information Technology is Impacting FM

March 8, 2017

To assess the state of IT today in commercial facility management, IFMA and GEFMA have released a second edition of its popular book.

The relationship between facility management and information technology (IT) is one that takes further steps to explore and investigate. IT security has become a hot topic in light of recent breaches, in both the private and public sector. Internet of Things has opened a door for new technologies to streamline processes for building operators.

To assess the state of IT today in commercial buildings, a collaboration between the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Information Technology (IT) Community and the computer-aided facility management (CAFM) working group (Arbeitskreis CAFM) of the German Facility Management Association (GEFMA) have produced an updated edition of the popular book, The Facility Manager’s Guide to Information Technology.

Editors Michael May, Ph.D., and Geoff Williams, FMP, along with an international team of more than 20 respected authors created the book’s content, making this comprehensive subject and textbook an authoritative resource for the FM profession, according to the partners.

This second edition was pre-released at the Third Annual Technology Symposium, a collaborative effort between the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of IFMA and the North Texas Chapter of CoreNet, on January 26, 2017. The editors also held a book signing at the INservFM event in Frankfurt, Germany, on February 21, 2017, and will make copies available after a 9 a.m. session at the IFMA’s Facility Fusion Conference and Expo on April 6, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The second edition fully explores the latest IT trends impacting the FM profession, including:

  • Relationship between FM and IT
  • Technologies and their impact on FM
  • IT basics and security for facilities managers
  • CAFM systems, selection, trends, implementation strategies, data transfer/exchange and economic benefits
  • Mobile technologies and IT interfaces
  • Internet of Things
  • Data-driven facilities management
  • Building information modeling (BIM)
  • IT-based strategic space optimization in FM
  • FM application fields
  • FM business processes and their IT implementation
  • Information system strategies in FM
  • CAFM/BIM case studies

The appendices include seven international case studies — such as Nokia and the Denver International Airport — along with a checklist for the successful implementation of FM technology. The publication gives a practice-oriented guideline for internationally active facilities managers, CAFM developers, users and consultants. It also serves as a systematic textbook on FM and IT for international students.

The Facility Manager’s Guide to Information Technology: Second Edition is now available for purchase online via Amazon and Create Space
